Key WA seats in week two of campaigning

SEATS OF INTEREST IN WA:

FREMANTLE

There's something in the water at Fremantle, senior Liberal Arthur Sinodinos concluded, after the seat was mired in controversy for the second week. Sherry Sufi stood down over embarrassing events from his past, with the final straw being footage of him mocking his former boss Liberal MP Michael Sutherland using graphic sexual references. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited his electorate during the week but didn't invite him after it emerged he had publicly linked same-sex marriage to polygamy and opposed the apology to the Stolen Generation. Labor last week dumped its candidate Chris Brown for not disclosing teenage convictions, and this week, it was the Liberal party's turn for red faces.

SWAN

Labor's candidate for Swan, Tammy Solonec, called for Australia Day to be moved to Wattle Day on September 1, which recognises Australia's national flower. Ms Solonec, a human rights lawyer, is one of four indigenous candidates contesting the election for the party but stood for the Greens at the 2013 state election. Liberal candidate Steve Irons has been notably absent from the campaign trail.

HASLUCK

A boundary redistribution has strengthened Hasluck for the Liberals, so it was a focus for Labor this week. Candidate Bill Leadbetter accompanied frontbencher Anthony Albanese to inspect Gateway WA, a project the party began but was completed by their rivals. Three days later, Member for Hasluck, Liberal Ken Wyatt joined Communications Minister Mitch Fifield in Bickley to discuss the mobile black spot program.
