The discovery of a mutilated kangaroo in Western Australia's Great Southern region has prompted an investigation to find the person responsible.

The RSPCA said a member of the public discovered the partially skinned and disembowelled kangaroo still breathing and conscious on the ground in an area west of Albany early last week.

RSPCA WA chief inspector Amanda Swift described the torture the marsupial endured as "deeply disturbing and barbaric", and called on the community to help find the offender.
