McKenna convicted of more child sex crimes

Serial pedophile Dennis McKenna has been found guilty of sexually abusing another boy in his care more than 30 years ago in Western Australia.

In total, McKenna has now been convicted of 65 offences against 29 boys.

He stood trial before a judge without a jury in the WA District Court on two counts of indecently assaulting a teenager when he was the warden at St Andrews Hostel in Katanning in 1981 and 1982.

The complainant testified that McKenna, 70, placed the boy's hand over his underwear while chatting to a group of students and on another occasion invited the teenager to his flat where he masturbated him.

On Wednesday, Judge Julie Wager handed down her judgment, saying she was convinced beyond reasonable doubt of McKenna's guilt.

Judge Wager said McKenna had committed a significant breach of trust against the victim.

"He has lived with this for a significant period of time," she said.

While the victim did not attend the judgment hearing, Kevin Brown was among a group of his supporters in court on Wednesday.

Mr Brown, who was also abused by McKenna, said the victim should now feel vindicated.

"If you carry a secret around with you for so long, I think it's probably a big relief for him, so he should be feeling much better about himself," he said outside court.

"I know what it's like to feel like you're the only one, so he did a pretty brave thing."

McKenna's barrister Simon Watters said his client was disappointed with the result.

"He just hopes that any sentence he receives is moderate, bearing in mind the time he's already served in custody," he said.

McKenna, who is already serving nine years behind bars for similar offences, will face a sentencing hearing on November 13.
