A man will face trial in Perth for the murder of a fellow Irishman after prosecutors rejected his guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Vincent Martin Crowe is accused of murdering 21-year-old Kenny Meyler at a house on Helmsley Street, Scarborough on February 10, 2013.

Police originally charged Crowe, then aged 32, with grievous bodily harm with intent, but the charge was later upgraded to murder.

In the West Australian Supreme Court on Monday, the jury was told Crowe had admitted to manslaughter but that was not accepted by the prosecution.

When Crowe was arrested on February 11 last year, police said the victim suffered a stab wound to the neck.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but later died.

Opening submissions will begin on Tuesday.

The trial is set down for two weeks.
