A pilot missing since Tuesday has been found dead in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

Arthur Percy Ross McDowell, 62, left Indee Station at South Hedland about 4pm on Tuesday but never arrived at his destination, Roy Hill Station, about 300kms away, sparking an extensive search.

It takes about two-and-a-half to three hours to fly between the stations.

There had been no distress signal or contact from Mr McDowell, who had more than 40 years of flying experience.

Police coordinated ground crews and an aerial search involving eight helicopters and two planes over 3000sq km in the remote and rocky terrain.

The wreckage of Mr McDowell's helicopter was found about 3.20pm on Wednesday, 11km north of Roy Hill Station.

His body was located at the scene.

Police have informed his family and will work with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to determine the cause of the crash.
