The Aboriginal tent embassy on Perth's Heirisson Island is an eyesore and should be dismantled, West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has concurred.

A caller to talkback radio station 6PR made the comment to the Liberal leader on Thursday and he agreed.

"I guess if they're not causing any trouble, people turn a bit of a blind eye and if there's not sanitation or health problems, but I would hope that they would move on," Mr Barnett said.

"I respect the right of people to protest but they can't stay there on a permanent basis or semi-permanent basis."

City of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the council continued to monitor the island, liaise with community leaders and had organised for community service groups to visit the camp.

"The city remains hopeful of an amicable resolution to the occupancy of the island," Ms Scaffidi said.
