Heat warning for Perth as temps rise

Hot temperatures are forecast for Perth over the next few days, prompting a warning from the WA Health Department about avoiding heat stress.

State health co-ordinator Gail Milner said some people were particularly vulnerable in hot temperatures including the elderly, young children and babies.

"The body normally sweats to cool itself, but for the elderly and the very young, the body cannot always regulate temperature changes efficiently, which leads to heat stress," she said.

Heat-related illness can range from rashes or cramps, to very serious conditions like heat stroke.

Effects can also build up over days as people become exhausted from the heat, which could exacerbate heart disease and other chronic problems, Ms Milner said.

She added that people who worked outside or who were not used to the heat, such as tourists, might also be at higher risk.

"People should ensure they have ample supplies of non-alcoholic cool drinks and good sun protection," Ms Milner said.

The mercury is expected to reach 37C on Sunday followed by temperatures of 41C on Monday, 37C on Tuesday and 35C on Wednesday.
