Giraffe ends epic road trip in Perth

A female giraffe has completed a 4510 kilometre cross-country journey from Queensland to Perth where zookeepers hope she'll mate with resident breeding bull Armani.

Ellie, aged 16 months, has spent the past four days travelling from Australia Zoo in Queensland to the WA capital and joins seven-year-old female Kitoto, who came from Sydney last year.

"Having travelled through four Australian states, we believe this is one of the biggest overland transports in the world for a giraffe," Perth Zoo senior keeper Kaelene McKay said.

Ms McKay said Ellie was a favourite of the keepers at Australia Zoo.

"She has apparently inherited her mother's sweet nature, is a very gentle giraffe but also outgoing.

"We have no doubt she will settle in well to Western Australia."

Ellie was moved as part of the Australasian Giraffe Breeding Program, which aims to maintain genetic diversity between populations.

Less than 80,000 giraffe roam the African Plains.
