Former Hawk avoids further jail time in WA
A former AFL recruit for Hawthorn has avoided further jail time in Western Australia for offences committed to fund his methamphetamine addiction.
Dayle Garlett spent almost two months in custody while waiting for stealing and burglary charges to be dealt with.
On Wednesday in Perth Magistrates Court, Garlett was given a 12-month intensive supervision order and was ordered to undergo counselling and perform 60 hours of community service.
The 20-year-old was a successful junior footballer, but AFL clubs refused to draft him in 2012 amid concerns about his off-field behaviour.
Hawthorn took a punt on him last year, but Garlett quit early this year citing homesickness.
Garlett now hopes to train with his former WAFL club Swan Districts this month.
