Former AFL player Shane Yarran behind bars

Troubled former Fremantle Dockers footballer Shane Yarran is behind bars after he was allegedly involved in a high-speed police chase, tried to escape on foot and was eventually found by a police dog.

Police say they tried to pull over a Hyundai hatch that was driving dangerously fast in Gosnells, in Perth's south-east, at about 12.10am on Wednesday but it failed to stop.

The man then abandoned the car and fled on foot, but a police dog Nacho found him lying in bushes in the front yard of a home, they say.

Yarran, 27, was charged with offences including breaching bail, failing to stop in a circumstance of aggravation, reckless driving dangerous to the public and exceeding the limit by at least 45km/h, and driving without a licence.

The car was impounded for 28 days.

Yarran, from Hammond Park, was told to stay standing by Magistrate Adam Hills-Wright when he tried to sit several times as the long list of charges were read out in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Yarran was a mature age recruit who kicked 10 goals in six matches last year in what was a positive sporting story until he was forced to retire the week before Christmas because of personal and off-field issues.

He recently played for WA Amateur Football League B Grade side Kelmscott.

Another Kelmscott footballer, Shaye Hayden, received a seven-month suspended jail sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty in the WA District Court to grievous bodily harm for breaking the jaw of an opponent during a match in 2015.

Yarran was remanded in custody to appear again on June 7.
