Fire burns one million hectares in WA

A massive fire has burnt one million hectares in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The fire is burning through the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley in WA's northeast and although out of control and unpredictable, is not endangering any lives or properties.

The fire was started by lightning and was first reported in late September.

It is burning on Gibb River Station, Mount Elizabeth Station, Drysdale Station, Ellenbrae Station and Kurinji Station, near the Gibb River Road and Kalumburu Road intersection.

A DFES spokesman told AAP it's difficult to tell the direction the fire is travelling due to its size, but it has been mainly moving in a south and south westerly direction.

Pastoralists, Indigenous groups, Kimberley Land Council Rangers, Australian Wildlife Conservancy and DFES are fighting the fire and monitoring its movements.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area but to be extremely cautious if driving through the region.
