Festive treats for Perth Zoo's animals

The holiday season is in full swing for the animals at Perth Zoo, as their treats have been given a festive twist.

Galapagos tortoises Cerro and Sierra devoured a wreath made of juicy watermelon on Tuesday, and Nugget the wallaby enjoyed apple hidden in an edible Christmas tree made of the Albany Woolly Bush tree.

The festive treats are part of the zoo's animal enrichment program, which gives the creatures new challenges to keep them stimulated, happy and healthy.

Keeper Stephen Catwell said the program made sure every day was different for the animals, and pet owners could use the activities for their domestic animals.

"This could include hiding your dogs' food to encourage them to sniff it out and keep them busy, or freezing foodstuff and water to keep pets active and hydrated during summer," he said.
