Ex-AFL recruit loses jail term appeal

Former AFL recruit Dayle Garlett has lost an appeal against his prison sentence for a drug-fuelled crime spree.

Garlett, 22, is serving four years and eight months behind bars after pleading guilty to 14 charges including burglary, car theft and reckless driving.

The former Hawthorn recruit appealed the sentence, claiming the prison term was manifestly excessive, and indicated he wanted to revive his football career.

But the West Australian Court of Appeal dismissed his application on Thursday in a unanimous decision, saying none of the grounds of appeal had a reasonable prospect of succeeding.

Justice Robert Mazza said the jail term was not crushing and Garlett still had the prospect of a useful life following his release from prison.

"That life may or may not involve the appellant playing AFL football," Justice Mazza said.

"If he has lost the opportunity to play AFL football, the appellant himself must bear responsibility for that consequence."

Garlett was a champion junior footballer, but all the AFL clubs declined to draft him in 2012 due to concerns about his off-field behaviour.

Hawthorn took a punt on him in 2013 but he left the club in March 2014, saying he was homesick and could not meet the demands of being an AFL player.
