Escapee who led wild chase gets more jail

A man who wriggled out of handcuffs and sparked a massive police chase while on the run for 17 hours in Perth, ramming police cars and deliberately driving at officers, has been handed more jail time.

Lawrence Arnold Hansen, 27, was a remand prisoner in October 2016 when he broke free from guards as they led him from a hospital to a van.

He ran across a freeway into a residential area, where he robbed a house and stole a car.

When police spotted him driving it the next day, he sped off, drove into a children's playground and got bogged in a sandpit.

He managed to free the car just as police were reaching for the driver's door.

Hansen then drove at an officer, forcing him to jump out of the way.

Other drivers also had to take evasive action when he drove on the wrong side of the road.

He eventually stopped on a median strip, where he was boxed in by police cars, which he rammed.

As he took off again, he drove at a policeman who was attempting to deploy a stinger device - following him as he moved out of the way - before speeding off down a side street.

Hansen was chased through six suburbs before he lost control, hitting a street sign.

During the pursuit, he reached speeds up to 140km/h, drove on cycle lanes and smashed through fences.

Four police cars were damaged and the stolen car was left beyond repair.

"It was only by good luck ... that no one was killed in this two-hour period," District Court of WA Judge Simon Stone said on Wednesday.

"How someone wasn't injured I'll never know."

Hansen, who has spent most of his adult life in prison, is already serving a four year sentence handed down in August last year.

Judge Stone sentenced him to an additional three years.

Shortly after his escape, then corrective services minister Joe Francis said Hansen should have been double shackled.
