Doctor's sex assault accuser 'not my type'

A doctor accused of sexually assaulting a patient at a WA hospital told investigating police he didn't molest her, adding he didn't find her attractive and she may have had diseases.

Priyantha Padmike Dayananda was charged with sexual penetration without consent after the woman complained he inserted his hand into her underwear during an abdominal examination in an emergency department cubicle at Bunbury Hospital in December 2017.

She also claimed he paid her "special attention" when she was recuperating from surgery in October that year, suggesting they "meet up" and stroking her hair.

She further claimed he called and texted her multiple times in the weeks after the offence, which had caused her to run from the hospital and take a taxi home.

In video footage of Dayananda's police interview, which was played in the District Court of WA on Friday, he told detectives "I didn't do anything".

"She's not my type. I'm not attracted to a girl like that," he said.

"She's not sexually attractive.

"It's very dangerous. You don't know what she carries."

One of the detectives asked him if the main reason he wouldn't inappropriately touch a patient was fear of disease, but he replied: "Not because of that - because I have a wife."

He also denied sending the texts, saying he had never sent dirty messages to anyone, but could not explain how they had come from his phone.

Dayananda said the woman made no advances to him but he found her "not normal ... a troublesome one".

The court heard earlier this week that the woman didn't know her molester's name but recognised his voice and Indian accent.

After she complained, a hospital staff member asked her to point him out from a selection of photographs of the male doctors, but she swiftly selected a different doctor.

Defence counsel Simon Watters accused that man of being the offender, which the Pakistani doctor denied in court.

Prosecutor Joel Grinceri says the woman simply made an error and evidence proved Dayananda was the offender.
