Disgraced former WA MP Barry Urban charged with fraud

Disgraced West Australian Labor-turned-independent MP Barry Urban has been charged with 12 fraud offences.

The 49-year-old Jarrahdale man has been charged with uttering a forged document, attempted fraud and forging a record related to information he allegedly provided during applications involving the WA Police Force.

He also faces charges of giving false evidence before a parliamentary committee.

In that committee, which was ordered by the premier, it was found the Mr Urban fabricated his university qualifications, falsely claiming to have been a war crimes investigator in Bonsnia which led to him wearing fake war medals and repeatedly lying to investigators.

In his final speech to Parliament last year he said it was a situation he “regrets” and will haunt me for the rest of my life”.

Urban will face court in October and police say the maximum penalty is seven years imprisonment.
