Cultures unite for emotional Anzac Day haka and corroboree

Two cultures came together this Anzac Day for the haka and Aboriginal corroboree at Kings Park in Perth.

Thousands of people gathered after this morning’s Anzac dawn service to watch the emotional performance, as the two traditional ceremonies united for the first time.

Haka for Life founder Leon Ruri said it was a chance for them to express themselves with the two cultures uniting.

“It’s a demonstration to the world that you can bring two cultures together no matter the differences,” he said.

“My great grandfather fought in WW1 for New Zealand Rifle Company - I just have so much emotion that comes with this day and my way to express myself through haka.”

The haka was performed before a traditional Aboriginal celebratory dance finished the ceremony in front of a massive crowd.

“I think it's a great fit for Anzac Day that we get to express ourselves as Indigenous cultures and Australia and New Zealand - I think it strengthens the bond our two countries have together,” he said.
