Calls for Easter police blitz on WA roads

Police must divert every available patrol car and speed camera to Western Australia's country roads to prevent another deadly long weekend, according to the opposition.

Opposition road safety spokeswoman Michelle Roberts said the state government should throw every resource it can across WA's regional roads to avoid a repeat of the record-breaking Labor Day weekend, where 11 people died.

Ms Roberts said the additional costs could be paid for with cash reserves in the state's road trauma trust account, drawn from traffic infringement revenue.

"The minister and her government are sitting on now $150 million in the road trauma trust account - let's free up some of that money to fund some police overtime."

A spokesman for Police Minister Liza Harvey said there would be a major traffic operation on WA roads this weekend "like there is each Easter as it is the busiest time".
