Lives and homes could be under threat from a bushfire burning in Western Australia's South West region, with residents warned to leave or get ready to defend their property.

A watch and act alert has been issued for people in the eastern parts of Roelands and Brunswick, in the Shire of Harvey, for the blaze that started about 11am on Monday.

The wind is expected to shift from southwesterly to southeasterly about 6pm, the Department of Fire and Emergecy Services says.
