Bushfire mitigation summit set for WA

A bushfire mitigation summit will look at how Western Australia can prevent and better prepare for destructive fires across the state.

Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan said the invitation-only summit would bring key groups together on Friday to discuss topics such as prescribed burning and bushfire management.

The summit will provide updates on the Ferguson report, which examined the lightning-sparked Yarloop blaze that killed two elderly men last year and destroyed 181 properties, including 166 houses.

The key recommendation was for a dedicated country fire service, which in February then-premier Colin Barnett said would be based in Collie, a coal mining town in the South West region.

Premier Mark McGowan said while in opposition that he supported Collie as the location for the rural fire service, which was among 17 recommendations the government accepted from the report.

WA Nationals member for the agricultural region Colin de Grussa said regional communities would not have input due to the summit's exclusive nature.

"The failure to open the bushfire mitigation summit to a wider regional audience proves that this Labor government are not interested in engaging with regional firefighters," he said.

Public submissions for the summit remain open until July 9.
