A 50-year-old Broome man has been sentenced to 22 months behind bars after he posted himself more than 2kg of cannabis just six weeks after completing his punishment for a 4.4kg haul.

Vincent Lee Lievense mailed himself 2.154kg of the drug from a Perth post office in late December but it was intercepted by police.

The District Court of Western Australia heard during sentencing on Friday that Lievense made full and frank admissions when arrested, saying he intended to sell the cannabis to pay off a drug debt.

The court also heard he had a long history of cannabis use, starting smoking it at age 13, and was in 2012 jailed for three years after being caught with 4.472kg of the drug.

The sentencing judge for that offence said Lievense was "near the top of the hierarchy in Broome for dealing drugs".

Judge Michael Gething noted the latest offending was committed within six weeks of his parole order expiring.

Lievense will be eligible for parole this time after serving 11 months.
