The bushfire alert level for an area north of Esperance has been downgraded for the second time to watch and act after a breakout near a major highway was contained.

The fire is burning between Scaddan and Grass Patch, posing a possible threat to lives and homes, and could move towards Salmon Gums if the wind changes from a north westerly to a south westerly.

More than 200 firefighters are working to control the blaze and another major lightning-sparked fire to the east of Esperance in the Stockyard Creek and Mullet Lakes areas, which remains subject to a watch and act alert.
