Border Force officials are now empowered to seize synthetic drugs.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan said the crackdown would be complemented in Western Australia, where legislation on synthetic drugs is progressing through parliament.

"We are going to make it impossible for criminals to game the system to import synthetic drugs," he told reporters at a press conference about Canning candidate Andrew Hastie's plan to combat the drug ice.

"From today, Border Force officials have been empowered to seize those drugs. If you import them and you don't have a legitimate use, you can go to prison for up to five years."
