Barnett rejects call to sack Perth council

City of Perth councillors descended into "crazy stuff" at a meeting this week but there is no need to sack them pending fallout from the lord mayor's travel scandal, Premier Colin Barnett says.

Deputy Lord Mayor James Limnios had called for Lisa Scaffidi to stand aside following two damning reports about her non-disclosure of travel and accommodation gifts.

Instead, five out of nine councillors carried a non-binding no-confidence motion against him on Tuesday for not attending enough council functions delegated to him.

After councillor Reece Harley described the meeting as a "s***storm", opposition leader Mark McGowan called for the council to be sacked. But Mr Barnett rejected his comments, while conceding the conduct was "crazy stuff" and "not very proper".

"There's no doubt there's been some damage to the standing of Perth city council, but the process, like it or not, is in place and a penalty is being determined, so it's not appropriate for Mark McGowan to intervene in that way," Mr Barnett told ABC radio on Thursday.

"If I saw clear evidence of illegal or corrupt behaviour, that course of action might well be appropriate, but there is no evidence of that."

Mr Barnett said he still considered it a serious matter and believed Ms Scaffidi's travel had been excessive.

He said potential action against her by the State Administrative Tribunal could range from a slap on the wrist to a ban on holding public office.

Local government minister Tony Simpson said the councillors were acting like children around the dining table and needed a "clip around the ears".
