Barnett prefers not to see burqas in WA

WA Premier Colin Barnett doesn't like to see Muslim women in Australia wearing burqas but he wouldn't support a ban on the garment in government buildings.

"We're not about to introduce laws into Western Australia to ban the burqa," Mr Barnett said of the garment that covers the face.

"But I think when people come from other countries with other religious beliefs and other cultural issues that relate to the burqa - I would appeal to people not to wear that type of clothing in Australia.

"As Australian citizens, it is not part of our culture and I think in most countries now you don't find that's the case."

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has called for the burqa to be banned in specific areas, saying her party's policy was to prohibit the Islamic garment in all Queensland official buildings.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk questioned why Ms Hanson had raised the issue. She said there was already a requirement in Queensland government buildings for people to show their full face.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said burqas were not commonly worn in Australia.
