Barnett criticises Roe 8 opponents

WA Premier Colin Barnett has criticised protesters for disrupting the government's Roe 8 project, saying they were refusing to accept the courts' decisions and did not deserve sympathy.

Two women were sitting in trees on Monday morning as part of long-running protest action including many arrests by opponents that want to save the Beeliar Wetlands.

They government is clearing land there for the $450 million project that it says will take trucks off roads in the southern suburbs.

The WA Liberal party is pushing on with the wider $1.9 billion Perth Freight Link, promising on Sunday to build the five kilometre Roe 9 project, including a tunnel, if re-elected in March despite Labor vowing to dump the entire plan.

Mr Barnett has been criticised for going ahead with 100ha of land clearing so close to the March election, given Labor will scrap the project.

"They (opponents) took action through the courts, one court after another they lost all those actions, they won't accept that decision so how much sympathy do we need?" he said.
