A 45-year-old man who allegedly attacked a policeman with a samurai sword in Perth's south has faced court.

Police say the officer suffered a large head wound and needed numerous stitches after the assault at a Rockingham home, where they were responding to a domestic violence incident between a man and a woman.

They allege Milos Radovic had left the home before police arrived but returned and attacked the officer.

The man was tasered and has been charged with a string of offences, including intent to maim by unlawful wounding and two counts of breaching a violence restraining order.

He appeared before the Rockingham Magistrates Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody to appear in court again on August 2.
