Man accused of throwing pie at Alan Joyce faces Perth court

The Perth man who shoved a lemon meringue pie into the face of Qantas boss Alan Joyce last month has appeared briefly in court but did not have to enter a plea.

Tony Overheu, 67, who was slapped with a lifetime ban by the national carrier after the stunt at a business breakfast at Perth's Hyatt Regency hotel on May 9, faces charges of common assault, damaging property, trespass and giving false details to police.

He left a room of more than 500 people aghast when he strolled up to Mr Joyce after waiting backstage and shoved the $25.95 pie in his face as he was delivering a speech.

Overheu, a former farmer and devout Christian who was protesting against corporate support for same-sex marriage, later apologised to Mr Joyce.

"My family are outraged, my wife is at my throat. I didn't understand that I'd breached the state's criminal code ... so clearly I regret that," he told 6PR radio.

But the airline's chief executive was unforgiving, saying Qantas had a role to play in being part of public debate on a range of issues.

"My intention is to send a message that this type of behaviour isn't acceptable and that I will have every intention of pressing charges," Mr Joyce said at the time.

The Qantas ban means Overheu will no longer be able to fly with its budget airline Jetstar or its alliance partners, including Cathay Pacific and Emirates.

Overheu did not speak to reporters outside court on Wednesday although he had earlier paused to be photographed. He will next face court on July 7.
