WA public servants postpone strike

West Australian public servants have postponed a planned strike over a new wage deal because talks with the government have become more fruitful since the stopwork threat was made.

The Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association had scheduled the strike for Wednesday after members voted in favour of industrial action, having rejected a pay offer of 2.5 per cent per year for the next three years.

The union said the offer wasn't good enough and was tied to trade-offs in working conditions.

But talks with Department of Commerce representatives have since been more fruitful, branch secretary Toni Walkington said.

The union said it would maintain pressure on the government and had pencilled in June 18 as an alternative date for strike action should negotiations not result in "meaningful change".

"Failure to put an acceptable offer on the table will see many experienced public servants, who are working with constant budget cutbacks, lost to the private sector," Ms Walkington said.
