WA Premier Mark McGowan was mid-sentence when the screech of car tyres and an unfamiliar voice hijacked his outdoor press conference.

Mr McGowan was providing his coronavirus update when a vehicle sped past, someone inside bellowing the oddly affectionate expletive – "I f---ing love you, buddy".

The unwanted interruption left the Premier momentarily speechless, with a ripple of laughter filtering through the gathered press pack.

"That's not the sort of language you normally here in Rockingham," Mr McGowan joked.

This is not the first time Mr McGowan has experienced an interrupted press conference.

A high-power vehicle has hooned past him in a previous press conference while the Premier himself has cracked up when discussing COVID-19 social distancing breaches.

He shared a light-hearted laugh over reports a NSW man was fined $1000 for allegedly stopping to eat a kebab "mid-run".

"They do things differently in New South Wales," he told reporters.

Western Australia has a total 549 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
