Liberal backbenchers from Western Australia deny they are defying Prime Minister Tony Abbott by ramping up their campaign for GST reform.

The group, led by Liberal senator Dean Smith, will write to Treasurer Joe Hockey on their push for changes in the way GST revenue is carved up amongst the states.

WA says it gets about 37 cents of every GST dollar it raises and the group is arguing the case for this to be raised to 75 cents.

Mr Abbott has cautioned coalition MPs against putting in their own submissions to the forthcoming white paper on tax reform, after Liberal MP Christian Porter foreshadowed such a move,

Senator Smith says the group is not defying their leader.

"(We've) taken the view that it's a constructive course to take," he told ABC radio on Monday.
