WA Cricket heads hold crisis talks over controversial crowd cap

The WA State Government is today holding a crisis meeting with transport and cricket heads to discuss potential possibilities to lift a crowd cap on a Big Bash League final at Optus Stadium.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the city's public transport network could not cope with a mid-week crowd of 55,000 people, while the stadium's footbridge was still under construction.

The PTA recommended up to 15,000 ticket sales be scrapped - limiting spectator numbers to 40,000 for the Thursday or Friday evening game, providing the Perth Scorchers secure the home semi-final.  

Word the stadium would not be open for a sell-out crowd sparked major backlash from the sporting community. 

"There was an interim decision made last year about a cap," Ms Saffioti said.

"We are revisiting that issue and I have asked my departments to work directly with the WACA and there is a meeting happening today."

The East Perth footbridge - designed to allow more than 14,000 spectators get to and from the stadium precinct - is close to two years overdue and isn't expected to be complete until mid-year.

Private cars and ride share services are banned from the $1.5 billion venue on event days, limiting crowd travel options to public transport or taxis.

But the PTA said a likely BBL semi-final start time around 4.30pm will mean most busses and trains will be servicing their regular routes.

"If we can find some solutions - in particular the early arrival of a significant amount of people - we can see what we can do."

Mr Saffioti said a final decision on crowd numbers won't be announced until after the Scorchers' last regular season round on January 27.
