Western Australia braces for potential Christmas cyclone

Western Australia's west Kimberley coast is on Christmas cyclone watch amid predictions a tropical low may re-intensify before reaching landfall.

Ex-Cyclone Yvette is moving towards the coastline, with those living in the Kimberley between Cape Leveque and De Grey, including Broome, being warned to prepare their families and home for a possible cyclone.

The system was located some 610km west northwest of Broome early on this morning and is moving towards the coastline at 13km/h.

The weather bureau is warning that gales are possible on the coast between Cape Leveque and De Grey on Christmas Day if the system redevelops, with heavy rainfall expected to be confined to the east of where it's tracking.

There has already been wild weather in the state's north, with Broome experiencing its wettest December day on Thursday with 226mm of rainfall.

Some roads in Broome remain closed, including the Great Northern Highway between Sandfire Roadhouse and Roebuck Roadhouse.

A severe weather warning has also been issued for the North Interior and parts of the Kimberley and South Interior districts, with heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds.

Heavy rain is already falling in the south Kimberley and North Interior and is expected to extend into the South Interior today, while conditions in the Kimberley will gradually ease as a low moves south.

Locations which may be affected include Giles, Kiwirrkurra, Parnngurr and Warburton.
