The issue only appeared to be impacting callers on the Vodafone mobile network.
"We are aware of a technical issue affecting some calls from Vodafone customers to the South Australia Police Assistance Line (131 444)," a Vodafone spokesperson told 9news.com.au this morning.
"Early investigations suggest the issue is intermittent and limited to voice calls.
"We are working closely with SA Police to support their investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available."
SA Police confirmed the matter was under urgent investigation and it was working with partners to resolve it as soon as possible.
SA residents unable to reach 131 444 were advised to call on a landline or mobile device on another network.
In an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000).
