With hundreds already dead and the death toll set to rise, here is what we know about how the Nepalese disaster unfolded.

A landslide near the Nepal-Tibet border at 8.37am (local time) on Wednesday triggered the deadly floods that swept water and mud through the Lhende Khola, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.

A glacier in the Himalayas is believed to have broken off and caused the event.

CCTV captured the moment residents in the Rasuwagadhi border point tried to flee the incoming disaster before the camera went dark.

Nearby, in the town of Trishuli, a bridge was wiped out by the raging waters.

The area is popular for pilgrimages and tours, with tourists from Australia, the US, Canada, the UK and India among the missing.

The Australian government has confirmed that 39 Australians are unaccounted for in the region.

As of 4pm on Friday, 469 people are confirmed dead and more than 1400 more are missing.

There are fears those figures will rise as search and rescue crews sift through the debris and rubble.
