Virus welfare calls to begin in SA

Potentially life-saving welfare calls will be offered to vulnerable South Australians amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The state government, in conjunction with the Red Cross, has called on community members to nominate themselves, family or friends for the free daily service.

It is targeted at older South Australians, people living with disability, those experiencing mental illness, people recovering from an illness or accident, or anyone with an ongoing health condition who are self-isolating.

Red Cross staff and volunteers will ask clients questions about their mental and physical health, if they need medical or food supplies, as well as offering the latest government health advice.

Premier Steven Marshall said the service could "literally be a lifesaver".

"Welfare calls are another component of the state government's strong plan to reduce the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the health of South Australians," Mr Marshall said.
