Virtual volunteering grows in Australia
Most people picture volunteering as soup kitchens, surf lifesaving or doing aid work on the other side of the world.
But one charity founder wants you to give back from the comfort of your own couch.
DoSomething Founder Jon Dee says busy Australians are increasingly contributing their time online or over the phone.
And he says this "virtual volunteering" can be done at any time, day or night.
"You could even do it in your pyjamas and no one needs to know," Mr Dee said, before International Volunteer Day on Friday.
People can work with the Red Cross, call to check on the wellbeing of the elderly, assist UN projects in developing countries through writing, design, research or translation, and help scientists annotate images of penguins in Antarctica.
Mr Dee said it was ideal for people with disabilities or mobility restrictions and young Australians who are keen to use their internet and computer skills.
"You don't have to be fit or outgoing. You don't have to be able to drive a car. All you need is an internet connection and a bit of spare time," he said.
The DoSomethingNearYou website provides people with volunteering opportunities in their area, and virtually connects them with charities in remote communities.
"It overcomes the tyranny of distance we have in Australia," Dee said.
