Violent storms lash Gold Coast with more wild weather to come

The Gold Coast recorded over 2700 lightning strikes overnight as twin storm cells descended on the city around 6pm.

A time-lapse video shot in Surfers Paradise yesterday afternoon shows the skies darken as clouds roll in and blanket the city with rain and mist.

The camera is buffeted by wind as the cell surges on until cloud almost wipes visibility out completely, with heavy rains and winds lashing the region.  

 The storms caused flash flooding on the Gold Coast highway and in the Tweed Heads area before hitting Coolangatta at around 11pm.

The weather followed a record heat wave in south-east Queensland that saw temperatures rise to 41 degrees in some areas.

More storms are forecast and are expected to continue until at least tomorrow night.
