A shocking racist attack in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD has been caught on camera.

Witnesses to the incident recorded the vile assault on an Indian man by a group of thugs, who taunted him and hurled racial slurs in the middle of Spencer Street last night.

“Screaming “f--- back off to your own country, mate,” the group turned on the man.

They hurled a tirade of abuse at the man before being told to behave by a security guard.

The group had already had a run with at a bouncer at a nearby bar, even throwing a chair around.

“They were absolutely out of control,” one witness said.

“They seemed like they just wanted to fight.”

The Australian Human Rights commissioner Tim Wilson has condemned the incident.

"We live in an open an tolerant society and there is no room for this sort of conduct,” he said.

The Commission deals with more than 2000 complaints of this kind each year.

“It's always best to have people speak out against the type of abuse that we see in this situation,” Mr Wilson said.
