Victorians well-behaved on Australia Day

Victorians' behaviour has been "mellow" on Australia Day, despite fears of a surge in violence.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Ray Rowe told AAP there had been no major incidents as people gathered at barbecues and parties across the state.

"It's been pretty damn good today," Mr Rowe said.

"Nothing of note. No major incidents."

Ahead of the long weekend police had called for people to act responsibly as figures showed more assaults occurred on Australia Day than any other public holiday.

There were 121 non-family-violence related assaults on the day last year - almost double that of an average day in Victoria.

There were also 109 assaults reported to police on Australia Day in 2012 and 121 the previous year.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman on Sunday night said Australia Day celebrations had been "mellow", with no major incidents reported by about 9pm (AEDT).

However, Mr Rowe warned the trouble could begin as darkness fell.

"Early evening and later tonight is when it might pick up," Mr Rowe said.
