Victorian power station worker dies after accident

A Victorian power station worker has died after suffering serious burns caused by an industrial accident in the state’s east.

The unit controller was maintaining high voltage equipment when the incident occurred at Yallourn North Power Station about 4pm yesterday.

The man, aged in his 50s, succumbed to his injuries in hospital this afternoon.

“We don’t know what has happened, we’re not sure exactly what has gone on,” Head of Yallourn Power Station, Mark Pearson, said.

“However Worksafe and Energy Safe Victoria have started their investigations, and we will be helping them in any way we can.

The deceased was employed by Energy Australia for more than thirty years.

CMFEU Mining Energy paid tribute to the man in a Twitter post, writing: “We are devastated by the loss of a long-term member of our Union, who has died today following a catastrophic accident at Yallourn Power station”.

“His family and co-workers have our condolences and support.”
