Victorian holiday road toll stands at one as police gear up for busy week

A man who died after crashing into the media strip of the Monash Freeway in Dandenong North on Boxing Day was Victoria’s first holiday road fatality.

But police are out in force and determined to stop that number from rising.

A police investigation has determined the driver of the silver Proton was driving at high speed when he lost control of the car and crashed about 1.30am (AEDT).

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill has urged drivers to be vigilant.

"I'm urging all Victorians to think about the safety of themselves and their loved ones this year," he said.

"Be courteous, patient and respect others on the road, it's not a race."

The Christmas road death toll still sits at one, but police in holiday areas, such as Mornington, are on high alert.

This morning Mornington police charged a 67-year-old with drink driving after catching him behind the wheel following a heavy drinking session the day before.
