Victorian drivers under 25 could face zero blood alcohol limit regulations: report

Young Victorian drivers could reportedly be subjected to a zero blood alcohol limit under a proposed overhaul of drink-driving laws.

The incoming road policing boss, Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer, has suggested the 0.00 limit as part of a reworking of the state’s road regulations, the Herald Sun reports.

At present, learner and P-plate drivers have a zero limit, which rises to 0.05 on a full license.

“The age group from 21 to 25 is significantly over-represented in road trauma and fatalities with alcohol in their system,” Mr Fryer told the newspaper.

“For me, a discussion about the under-25s is a discussion we need to have.”

A further focus of the new plans is minimising the deaths attributed to drug-taking drivers.

Since 2013, more fatalities have occurred with illicit drugs being a factor than alcohol.
