Man seriously injured after alleged attack by petrol thieves in Melbourne
A man has been left with serious injuries after he was allegedly attacked with bats by a pair of petrol thieves in Melbourne's south-east.
Police said the attack occurred after the victim allegedly followed a man and woman from a Ferntree Gully petrol station after witnessing the pair stealing petrol at a service station on the Burwood Highway around 6pm on January 5.
The 31-year-old Cranbourne man allegedly followed the couple through Ferntree Gully before driving off, and then realised he was being pursued.

When he pulled up at a red light on Wellington Road, Rowville, the couple got out of their car and began hitting him with bats and batons, police were told.
The pair, described as a Caucasian man in his early 30s with brown hair and a Caucasian woman in her early 20s with dyed red hair, then got back into their car and fled the scene.
People nearby stopped to help the man, who was left with severe arm injuries, calling emergency services.
Police said it's believed the same group were involved in a spate of petrol thefts in the area between November 2023 and January this year.
Witnesses are urged to contact police.
