Alleged drink driving P-plater discovered with eight people crammed in car

An alleged drink-driving P-plater in Victoria is facing a slew of charges after she was discovered with eight people crammed inside her car on New Year's Day.

The female driver, a 37-year-old from St Kilda, was travelling in an unregistered black Mercedes along Williams Road in South Yarra when police allegedly spotted five people in the back seat about 1.30am.

After pulling the car over, police discovered a further three people inside the vehicle.

According to police, the front-seat passenger had someone sitting on their lap, while the three back-seat passengers had two others on top of them as well, all without seatbelts.

The driver undertook a breath test and returned an alleged reading of .09.

Under Victorian law, drivers who hold a probationary licence are subject to a zero blood alcohol limit.

Police will further allege the driver was also not displaying her P-plates, despite the conditions of her licence.

The Mercedes was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $950.

The driver is expected to be charged on summons for a range of driving offences.

The charges include drink-driving, overloading a vehicle, use of an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to display P-plates and driving with passengers not wearing seatbelts.

A 26-year-old Frankston man and two 36-year-old St Kilda women were also issued penalty notices of $385 for failing to wear a seatbelt.
