Two brothers have been set upon by thugs, beaten and left for dead in the middle of the road in Mornington overnight.

Lochie Higgins, 20, and Reuben Higgins, 17, had been out for dinner when they were attacked in a supermarket car park about 3am.

Bystanders rushed to help as the attackers fled in an unknown vehicle.

Both suffered fractures to their skulls and bruising to their neck and chest and remain in the trauma unit of the Alfred Hospital.

Doctors are unsure of their prognoses.

Their father Dean Higgins told 9News the boys were avid boxers and “good boys, little bit cheeky like most of us”.

“One inch higher and both my sons may not be with us,” Mr Higgins said.

“It's not a phone call you like to get at four o'clock in the morning, I don't wish that upon anybody.”

A 28-year-old Lyndhurst man has turned himself in to police.
