Hundreds of new kindergartens needed to keep up with demand in Victoria, report finds

Hundreds of new kindergartens and dozens of schools will be needed over the next decade to keep up with demand in Melbourne's growth corridor, a new report has found.

The latest findings come from Infrastructure Victoria, which recommended about 900 new kindergartens will be needed in growing suburbs by 2036.

"Places like the north, the west and the south-east of Melbourne are going to have a big need," Infrastructure Victoria chief executive Jonathan Spear said.

"Now's the time to start planning so we are delivering the schools and kindergartens these families need."

Bundoora father-of-two Alex Reeves recently enrolled his children into kindergarten and said there was a lot of pressure to secure a spot.

"It is a little bit overwhelming but they did get their spots in the end so we're pretty excited to have them both in," he said.

Children Minister Lizza Blandthorn said the report confirmed what the government already knew.

The state is on track to deliver on its promise to build 100 schools by 2026.

However, according to Infrastructure Victoria, another 60 will be needed in the subsequent decade.
