Melbourne to Geelong in 32 minutes: Victoria's high speed plan

Fast trains would whisk commuters from Geelong to Melbourne in just 32 minutes by 2022, under plans unveiled today by Liberal Leader Matthew Guy.

The Opposition is promising a $19 billion rebuild of the state's regional rail network, to create a "European-style" system, with trains travelling at up to 200km/hour.

Mr Guy is promising to slash travel times from Ballarat to Melbourne to just 45 minutes, and from Traralgon to Melbourne to 62 minutes, as part of a plan to encourage more Victorians to live in regional cities.

Currently the fastest speeds possible on Victoria's railways is 160km/hour.

The coalition plan would require the construction of additional tracks along some sections of line, and the complete rebuilding of others.

It's also committed to a fleet of next generation trains.

The Andrews government is currently in the midst of a $1.7 billion upgrade of the regional rail link, funded in conjunction with the Commonwealth.

Mr Guy's plan, which is yet to have a business case, will be fully costed before the election, he says.

He says it's realistic and can be achieved without entering new debt and is hopeful it would receive federal funding.
