Victoria eases border restrictions with Greater Sydney, regional NSW and Brisbane

Victoria will further ease border measures with Greater Sydney, regional NSW and Brisbane from 6pm tonight, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced.

All of Greater Sydney's local government areas which are currently deemed as red zones of risk will become orange, with the exception of Cumberland.

The nine areas include: Blacktown, Canada Bay City, Burwood, Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool, Fairfield, Inner West, Parramatta and Strathfield.

The easing of border restrictions means people from these areas in Greater Sydney will be able to enter Victoria providing they get tested for coronavirus within 72 hours of arrival and isolate until they return a negative result.

Travellers must also confirm they have not been in the remaining red zone of Cumberland within the past 14 days - other than for transit - and have not been in close contact with a coronavirus case and do not have any symptoms.

The changes mean hundreds more Victorians will be permitted to travel home from tonight.

Mr Andrews described the changes to the state's strict border controls as a "very significant step".

"That will be great news, I know, for people who are wanting to come home," he said.

"It's based on public health advice and will be welcome news, I'm sure, for many, many people who want to get home and have had a summer that has been somewhat disrupted, and in some cases more than that."

The border changes come after New South Wales recorded its fifth day of zero community cases.

Greater Brisbane and regional New South Wales, with the exception of Wollongong and Blue Mountains, will also move from an orange zone to a green zone, permitting unrestricted travel into Victoria.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said health authorities would continue to closely monitor the remaining red zone of Cumberland for when it could move to an orange zone of risk.

People from Cumberland are still not permitted to travel to Victoria without an exemption, exception or essential worker permit.

"It might only be a matter of days before there's a change to that status," he said.

"We do like to see that 14-day period of no new cases and no new exposure sites, so those are things to watch for Cumberland in particular."

ACT eases border restrictions with Sydney

ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said the Chief Health Officer has revised its border controls for Greater Sydney.

The four geographical areas now deemed high-risk include: Northern Beaches, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland and Blacktown.
