Victoria braces for fire with high temperatures and wind change expected tomorrow

With memories of February’s fires still fresh, a combination of high temperatures and a south-westerly wind change has Victorian authorities on edge.

The forecast of 39 degrees has led to total fire bans in eight of the state’s nine districts.

The 41-degree prediction for Saturday will see a total fire ban implemented state-wide.

“It’s the first significant fire day across the state for this summer and it’s something we need Victorians to be atuned to,” Emergency Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said.

“Traditionally we’ve seen more loss of life, loss of property after the wind change.

“It’s a long, hot, dry summer so there’s no forecast for any significant rain.”

Those in high-risk areas are encouraged to download the updated Country Fire Association app.

The official health advice for tomorrow is to seek out public spaces where it’s possible to stay cool and hydrated and to look out for elderly neighbours.
